What Is Library Credit (LBRY)?

Library Credit (LBRY) is a platform that seeks to simplify the way digital content is distributed and accessed by both consumers and producers. Library Credit uses a decentralized model to be fair, free, and open to all the involved parties.
More specifically, the platform functions as a distributed network built on top of a protocol that makes it easy for publishers to charge a fee to content consumers without censorship or the need for a middleman. The project was launched towards the end of 2018 and is now serving an active community.
Who Are the Founders of Library Credit?
Jeremy Kaufman created Library Credit as a content hosting platform without any central authority.

Jeremy knows how to build and scale a startup starting from day one. He knows how to deliver usable products and get those products in front of the right people. Jeremy created LBRY because he fell in love with the idea of a shared, global content registry that is owned and controlled by no one. Unsurprisingly, he is a longtime supporter of decentralized technology and freedom of information
Aside from LBRY, Kaufman is also the founder of Topscore, a registry system for managing events and activities. He holds a degree certificate in physics and computer science from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Another LBRY co-founder is Alex Grintsvayg.

Grin drives technology development and manages infrastructure growth. Bringing LBRY to mainstream scale is his primary goal. Before LBRY, Grin designed and managed scalable infrastructure solutions for SaaS firms. He holds degrees in Computer Science and Psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Before Library Credit, Grintsvayg designed and managed system architecture for SaaS companies. At LBRY, he is responsible for technological development and overseeing the firm’s infrastructure growth.
Like Kaufman, Grintsvayg attended the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, from which he graduated with degrees in computer science and psychology.
Protocol engineer Lex Berezhny is responsible for the backend of crucial components such as the platform’s wallets, protocol, and blockchain.
Brannon King is a senior blockchain engineer at Library Credit. Before joining LBRY, Brannon created software in such languages as C++ and C#.
What Makes Library Credit Unique?
Library Credit uses the concept of a decentralized and distributed network (across several host computers) to build a content-sharing crypto platform that offers a level playing field for all participants.
It specifically seeks to solve some of the major problems (such as censorship, abuses of user privacy, unfair revenue sharing formula) that affect corporations that offer similar services.
The revenue generated from content consumers’ activity is fully credited to publishers in their preferred payment method — whether in LBC (the native token) or through third-party processors.
Independent host providers can offer their computers’ processing power to earn a passive income on the platform. This mechanism is expected to make LBRY affordable and appealing to content creators.
How Many Library Credit (LBC) Coins Are There in Circulation?
For the first 20 years of the project, one billion (1,000,000,000) LBC tokens are set to be in circulation. However, that figure will decrease gradually on an annual basis, with about a hundred thousand (100,000,000) for the first year.
Additional reduction of the total supply will be incurred through bonus credits reserved for giveaway events, strategically meant to create initial public awareness.
See the full token allocation details below:
- 10% for partner organizations, charity firms and other strategic institutions. These include the EFF, ACLU and others with a strong reputation in advocating for digital rights, cybersecurity and the Internet’s freedom.
- 20% for awareness programs. This allocation will be freely distributed at the early stage of the project to drive adoption among users.
- 10% for the team, to cover operational costs and team expenses (human capital management).
- 60% to be earned by the community via various activities, such as LBC mining.
How Is Library Credit Network Secured?
The network is secured via an end-to-end encryption technology that combines a blockchain model and DHT (distributed hash tables) data structure for encoding and retrieving data in a peer-to-peer exchange.
Additionally, LBRY prioritizes each publisher’s intellectual property rights by using a robust record management system.
Additional measures such as hash modification, infringement penalties (defined in the DMCA) and processes that make infringements prohibitively expensive are continuously implemented to prevent other illegal activities.
To further prohibit intellectual property infringement, users are subjected to laws such as the DMCA.
Where Can You Buy Library Credit (LBC)?
LBC tokens are a critical component of the LBRY network. As such, the platform cannot operate without sufficient liquidity.
At the time of writing, LBC is traded against different currency pairs on exchanges such as:
- Upbit
- CoinEx
- Bittrex
- Hotbit

Lbry Coin Mining: How to Mine Lbry
Through the PoW mining process, you can earn LBC while strengthening the security of the LBRY network.
In this guide we cover:
- Overview of LBRY Mining
- Understanding Mining Profitability
- Sourcing Mining Equipment
- Colocating your FPGAs
- Renting Hashrate
- Setting up your FPGA
- Choosing and Configuring a Mining Pool
- Setting up an LBRY wallet
Overview of LBRY Mining
Mining is a process where computing power is used to verify transactions on the LBRY network and add them to the public ledger (LBRY blockchain). It is also the process of how new LBRY Credits (LBC) are created as a reward for the successful miners (see details below). The process uses the mining software to calculate complex mathematical puzzles in order to secure the transactions.
Both CPU and GPU hardware can be used for mining, but the current market is dominated by GPU and ASIC mining. LBRY uses a mix of SHA512, SHA256 and RIPEMD hash functions in its algorithm. To put it in the most simple terms: mining enables secure and fast LBC transactions.
Library Credits (LBC) are mined over a 20-year Proof of Work period. Block rewards increase every 100 blocks by 1LBC, peak at 500, and decline slowly.
Understanding Mining Profitability
LBRY mining economics are a result of mining revenue, operating expense & capital expenditure.
For revenue, you can go to a public mining calculator to check the current profitability. At the time of writing this guide, 1TH of hash power generates $14 in revenue a day but this fluctuates day-to-day based on network difficulty and coin price. You should estimate this revenue out for the investment horizon making sure to factor in potential increases in difficulty and any changes in block reward.
In regards to operating expenses, this is largely determined by your cost of electricity. As of 2020 you ideally want to pay less than 7-8 cents USD per kWh.
Sourcing Mining Equipment
LBRY mining is dominated by the FPGA market. GPU & CPU mining is not viable at this point given the network difficulty.
FPGA’s are a bit more specialized hardware that has higher mining efficiencies than GPUs for LBRY but also are more flexible than hardware like ASICs used to mine Bitcoin.
The following LBRY rigs are available on the market today:
MINER | HASHRATE | POWER CONSUMPTION (WATTS) | UNIT POWER (W/MH) |
---|---|---|---|
Baikal BK-D | 80 GH/s | 500 W | 0.006j/Mh |
Baikal BK-B | 40 GH/s | 400 W | 0.01j/Mh |
Going direct to the manufacturer is no longer an option given no new rigs have come to market.
ASIC resellers may also have miners available:
- Blockware Mining
- Kaboom Racks
Colocating your FPGAs
Depending on your residential electricity rate and the size of your mining operation you may decide to host your rigs with a third-party colocation. Typically the hosting facility will charge a flat rate per kWh for setup, ensuring proper operations, electricity and ongoing maintenance.
There are many hosting options available in the US / Canada which can be found in a database here. This database contains some of the top facilities like Blockware, Compute North, Core Scientific, Frontier, Box Miner, and many more.
Please make sure to do your own research before making any decision on engaging a colocation business. If you are self-hosting a farm you can check out various ASIC management software to make your life easier.
Setting up your FPGA
For this guide, we will set up a Baikal but the process is pretty similar for any rig.
Powering up the Miner Connect your machine to the power outlet via the built-in PSU. Then connect your miner to your internet-connected router or switch using a standard network cable. You are now ready to power up your miner.
Configuration To get started, navigate to your dashboard by finding your miners’ IP address using your router or scanner. Your page will look something like this:
Choosing and Configuring a Mining Pool
To finish the configuration, you will need to choose a mining pool. In choosing a mining pool, you can consider pool fee, payout method & frequency, the stability of the pool, user interface, statistics/data, customer support, community channels, and more. A list of pools can be found here.
In this guide, we will set up an FPGA with Luxor, a US-based mining pool that operates based on the pay-per-share (PPS) payment method.
- URL: stratum+tcp://lbc.luxor.tech:700
- Worker: [LuxorUsername].WorkerName Workername can be anything, but avoid using symbols or special characters as it may be invalid.
- Password: 123
Once you have filled out the details, click Save & Apply. Setup is now complete.
Monitoring Results
It will take about 5 minutes for your workers to appear on the stats page. To find your user, simply go to Luxor, login to your account and navigate to the Workers tab. You should see something like this:
Final Veridict
However, as the protocol or blockchain is open-source and viewable by anyone, the content can still be accessed, just not through the LBRY app. This safeguards against censorship. So, you shouldn’t worry if LBRY is a scam, as the app and LBRY service is safe to use.
